Międzynarodowy rejs badawczy z udziałem dr Anny Panasiuk uzyskał finansowanie na realizację
Z przyjemnością informujemy, że międzynarodowy projekt FINTRACK (Fin whale movement and trophic ecology at canyon-linked krill hotspots across the South Shetland–South Orkney Island system, Northern Antarctic Peninsula) uzyskał finansowanie na realizację ekspedycji naukowej na pokładzie statku badawczego R/V Maria S. Merian.
Projekt został przygotowany przez międzynarodowy zespół naukowców pod kierownictwem prof. Heleny Herr (Chief Scientist - University of Hamburg, Germany and Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), Germany). Funkcję Deputy Chief Scientist pełni dr Anna Panasiuk (University of Gdańsk). Współtwórcami projektu są także dr Simone Panigada Tethys Research Institute (Istituto Tethys ETS, Mediolan, Italy) i dr Lucas Krüger (Instituto Antartico Chileno).
Celem projektu FINTRACK jest zbadanie ekologii płetwala zwyczajnego (Balaenoptera physalus) w rejonie Półwyspu Antarktycznego oraz określenie zależności między występowaniem tych ssaków morskich a skupiskami kryla związanymi z systemami kanionów podmorskich. Badania pozwolą lepiej zrozumieć mechanizmy kształtujące rozmieszczenie kryla, zachowania żerowiskowe płetwali, ich ekologię troficzną oraz rolę, jaką odgrywają w funkcjonowaniu ekosystemów Oceanu Południowego.
W ramach FINTRACK wykorzystane zostaną zaawansowane metody badawcze, obejmujące m.in. autonomiczne glidery oceaniczne, telemetryczne śledzenie wielorybów, obserwacje z wykorzystaniem dronów, szczegółowe mapowanie biomasy kryla oraz badanie warunków oceanograficznych.
Projekt ma istotne znaczenie dla międzynarodowych działań na rzecz ochrony środowiska morskiego i wspiera prace Komisji ds. Zachowania Żywych Zasobów Morskich Antarktyki (CCAMLR), Międzynarodowej Komisji Wielorybniczej (IWC) oraz Southern Ocean Research Partnership (SORP).

The Antarctic international research cruise involving Dr Anna Panasiuk has been granted
We are pleased to announce that the international research cruise FINTRACK (Fin whale movement and trophic ecology at canyon-linked krill hotspots across the South Shetland–South Orkney Island system, Northern Antarctic Peninsula) has been granted for a scientific expedition aboard the research vessel R/V Maria S. Merian.
The project was developed by an international team of scientists led by Prof. Helena Herr (Chief Scientist). Dr Anna Panasiuk serves as Deputy Chief Scientist. The project team also includes Dr Simone Panigada and Dr Lucas Krüger.
The aim of FINTRACK is to investigate the ecology of fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) in the Antarctic Peninsula region and to examine the relationships between these marine mammals and krill aggregations associated with submarine canyon systems. The research will provide new insights into the mechanisms shaping krill distribution, fin whale foraging behaviour, trophic ecology, and the role these animals play in the functioning of Southern Ocean ecosystems.
The project will employ advanced research methods, including autonomous ocean gliders, whale telemetry, drone-based observations, detailed krill biomass mapping, and oceanographic surveys.
The project is highly relevant to international marine conservation efforts and supports the work of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), the International Whaling Commission (IWC), and the Southern Ocean Research Partnership (SORP).
